Spring 2008 Homework Assignments for PH213L (Fundamentals of Physics III)

(this page is available at aurora.wells.edu/~swh/ph213/ph213hwk.htm)

Assignment 1 (Assgd Thurs 31 Jan; Due Thurs 7 Feb)
Ch 22: Qs 5 (exploit the symmetry -- consider pairs of charges on the ring); 8; 11
Ch 22: Ps 5P; 14P; 22E; 24E
Ch 23: Ps 2E; 4E; 12P (vectors! specify direction as an angle with respect to horizontal direction); 17P*; 21P; 24P* (must do the integral); 27P (by "center" think of a point just above (or below) the center); 36E (you'll need to use kinematics)
Assignment 2 (Assgd Thurs 7 Feb; Due Thurs 14 Feb)
Ch 24: Q1; Q5; Q10; 6E (note that the total flux through the closed surface of netting + rim disk = 0); 17E; 25P; 38E; 43P (a comprehensive problem!!)
Assignment 3 (Assgd Thurs 14 Feb; Due Thurs 21 Feb)
Ch 25: Q1; Q3 (scalar superposition; note pairs of charges); Q6; 5E; 8P (note that for this uniformly charged ball, that E increases linearly with distance from the center; this choice of reference point is somewhat strange); 25E [there will be a couple more problems, stay tuned...]
Assignment 4 (Assgd Thurs 21 Feb; Due Thurs 28 Feb)
Ch 25: 14E; 18P; 45P
Ch 26: 2E; 8E; 16P; 22E; 24E (everything one would want to know!)
Ch 27: 2P; 8P; 12E; 19E; 22P; 35E; 42P
Assignment 5 (Assgd Tues 4 Mar; Due Tues 11 Mar)
Ch 29: Q5; 5P* (the energy unit 1 eV = 1.602 x 10^-19 J; it is the energy change experienced by a charge 1 e when it undergoes a voltage change of 1 V); 33E; 35E; 38P*; 41E (consider a single turn, then consider the same length formed into two turns . . .); 50E; 53E
Ch 30: 3E; 6E; 8P (use superposition; not too hard since all distances are constant on the arcs); 12P (use result of 11P); 23E; 29P know!)
