SPSS is a powerful computer package that does
statistical analyses
of data. It has been developed over many years and is like a huge
house that was built in stages, in many different architectural
styles. So there may be several ways to do almost the same thing,
but it may come out slightly different in each way. KEEP
NOTES when you figure out how to do something you might want to do
again.
It is on all the computers in Macmillan 101, and on the Dells in the
Social Sciences Lab (Mac 304).
Also in Main and
Weld.
Files for Homework: They should be in the Class
Material folder, Math 151BPS4e. On newer computers, this is on a
drive labeled DATA. On older ones, it may be on a drive
labeled STUDENT.
The Letter identifying the drive/device may vary. You can find it
by opening the Class Material folder on the Desktop, and looking in the
Address line at the top. There will be a letter like F:
or D:. Use the pull-down arrow in the Address line to see
what the name of the drive is. Knowing the name and/or the letter
of the drive will allow you to find it from within SPSS. The
folder PC-SPSS has the textbook problems. PCBPSbigdata
has some text files for bigger datasets. The files must be opened
from within SPSS. They are not in standard SPSSv.15 data type, so
you have to change Files of Type to All files to see
them in the Open File menu.
PC-SPSS and PCBPSbigdata are also on the CD in your
book, but not so obvious.
Insert the CD, wait till it opens. Ignore it.
From within SPSS, File>Open> Data. Pull down the
arrow on the Look in box. Find and click on the drive
with the BPS4e CD in it. Open the PCDatasets
folder. PC-SPSS and PCBPSbigdata are folders in
there, the same ones as in the Class Material folder.
(If you want to find these files outside SPSS, say to copy them
to your laptop, do this: Right click on the Windows Start button
(bottom left of your screen). Choose Explore (second from top,
usually) from the menu you get. In the left pane of the resulting
directory window, find and click on the drive with the BPS4e
CD in it. Open the PCDatasets folder. PC-SPSS
and PCBPSbigdata are folders in there, the same ones as in the
Class Material folder.
Ugh! Every time we change versions we find some new niggling
problems! If you have trouble, please email me with as much
info as possible: sievers@wells.edu
