USING SPSS TO FIND THE MEAN AND STANDARD DEVIATION QUICKLY

The computers in Mac 101 have SPSS 11 on them. Also the Dell computers in Mac 304.

You have a list of numbers, say 12.3, 12.6, 3.5, 8.9, 9.0 that you want the mean and standard deviation for:

1. Double-click on the red SPSS icon on the desktop.

2. Click CANCEL in the bottom right of the open "What would you like to do" window.

3. You'll see a grid. At the bottom left are two tabs--"Data View", "Variable View". Click "Data View". Your grid has gray "var"'s across the top

4.Type in the first data value and hit the ENTER key. Your value will go into the box in the first row and first column. Your variable is automatically named var00001.

5. Enter the rest of your data. It will go down the first column.

6. Select ANALYZE > DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS > DESCRIPTIVES using the menu bar. You get the  Descriptives dialog box.

7. Be sure var00001 is highlighted. Click the small arrow in the middle of the Descriptives Box to select var00001 to be analyzed. This variable will move to the white "Variables" box on the right side.

8. Click OK. The mean and standard deviation of your data are among the things printed in the Output window. (Use the slider at the bottom if you need to get to the right side of the window.) Copy them onto your paper. For the above data, mean =9.2600, std deviation =3.66647

9. In the Data Editor Window Select FILE >EXIT and answer NO twice when asked if you want to save the output and the data. (If you exited from the output window only, do FILE > EXIT again.)
