SPSS is a powerful computer package that does statistical analyses of data. It has been developed over many years and is like a huge house that was built in stages, in many different architectural styles. So there may be several ways to do almost the same thing, but it may come out slightly different in each way. KEEP NOTES when you figure out how to do something you might want to do again.
Where? as of Day 9, afternoon (email me , the class, with info: I'll update this
list) Mac 101, Mac 304.(but Class Material folder is not on Reed
machine?) Mac
110: Two machines on the center tables, facing the entry for
sure. Rest were "promised." Not on any Macintoshes!
Other locations? Let me know!
Files for Homework: (Feel free to copy the Class Material/Math 151-BPS4e folder to your own thumb drive/ computer.)
Updated Wed. Day 6 (Sept. 10)
In Macmillan 101/110 computers, they should be in the Student
folder--on the desktop--which contains the Class Material folder,
Math 151-BPS4e. The Student folder is on a drive called New
Volume. If you open the Start menu (circle, lower left of
desktop), choose Computer, it'll show you this drive.
The Letter identifying the drive/device is F: in Mac
101/110, but might be D: in Mac 304. Note that this Student folder is NOT the
C:>Users>Student folder! In that one, all data will
disappear when the machine reboots. In
the one in New Volume, it stays.
Knowing the name and/or the letter of the drive will allow you to
find it from within SPSS.
Computer>New Volume F:..>Student>Class
Material>Math151-BPS4e...
The folder PC-SPSS has the textbook problems.
PCBPSbigdata has some text files for bigger datasets. The
files must be opened from within SPSS. They are not in standard
SPSSv.16 data type, so you have to change Files of Type to
All files to see them in the Open File menu.
The CD in your book also contains PC-SPSS and PCBPSbigdata,
but it's not so obvious.
Insert the CD, wait till it opens. Ignore it.
From within SPSS, File>Open> Data. Pull down the
arrow on the Look in box. Find and click on the drive
with the BPS4e CD in it. Open the PCDatasets
folder. PC-SPSS and PCBPSbigdata are folders in
there, the same ones as in the Class Material folder.
(If you want to find these files outside SPSS, say to copy them
to your laptop, do this: Right click on the Windows Start button
(bottom left of your screen). Choose Explore (second from top,
usually) from the menu you get. In the left pane of the resulting
directory window, find and click on the drive with the BPS4e
CD in it. Open the PCDatasets folder. PC-SPSS
and PCBPSbigdata are folders in there, the same ones as in the
Class Material folder.
Ugh! Every time we change versions or computers we find new
problems! (This is the first term of SPSS on Vista.) If you have
trouble, please email me with as much info as possible:
sievers@wells.edu
--SPSS froze for several people when they were trying to print/print
preview. I thought it froze for me but it was just very slow; gave me a
gray screen, on which the print preview eventually came up. Wait, wait.
If it's really frozen, try to reboot= restart( Start menu, arrow to the
right of the padlock picture (lower right), Restart.)
If you can't do that, pull the plug. In Mac 101 this is the fat power
cord going in at the top of the back of the computer. Count to ten and
plug it in again. Turn it on.
You will have lost any unsaved work.
--Save your work frequently! (see above.) The Output file saves separately from the Data file (save that too if you modified it in any way.) The Output files tend to be quite large. Delete stuff that is wrong or useless, to save space and confusion.
