Discussion:
1. G.
Chiang explained that the goal of this meeting was to promote dialogue between
the Physical Education department and Dance Theatre and to discuss appropriate
adjacencies and efficiencies that should be considered during planning.
2. The
functional space program will be informed by the specific future space needs
detailed in the completed space data sheets.
This information is being used to assess the academic functional space
programming needs and to create a list of spaces.
3. Discussion began with shared space opportunities
between Physical Education and Athletics and Performing Arts:
a. Locker
room space:
i.
P.E. classes
ii.
Community use including children’s swim
iii.
Faculty/Staff locker space for 25
iv.
Wells Teams and dancers (if in the same
building as Performing Arts Dance program)
v.
Visiting Teams and male locker room space
b. The
locker rooms should be centrally located for easy access to showers and physical
conditioning equipment.
4. G. Chiang requested that the Physical Education and
Athletics faculty fill out the detailed Space Data Sheets which will help in
HOLT’s efforts to collect detailed information about space requirements. One set should be filled out for each space
envisioned.
5. It was determined that ideally Dance/Theatre and Music
(and possibly Visual Arts) should share a building and that Physical Education
and Athletics should be in a separate building.
The remainder of the meeting
involved only the performing arts faculty:
6. The preliminary functional space program tabulation
was reviewed and discussed in detail.
a. Dressing
Rooms:
i.
Each of the two large dressing room should
have private access to 1 shower, 1 toilet and a double sink vanity.
ii. The
two small dressing rooms could share a bathroom with 2 showers, 2 toilets and a
double sink vanity.
iii. Dressing
rooms could be shared by the proscenium theatre, the black box theatre and the
dance studio.
b. Costume
Construction Shop: 6 – 8 Stations
Costume Construction Shop
would serve as a costume creation area, four (4) sewing machine stations,
costume hanging space, two (2) 4’x8’ standup work tables, two (2) ironing
boards and a drafting table. Provide both incandescent and florescent light to
allow for viewing of colors and materials under both types of lights.
c. Costume
Maintenance Shop: 2 – 3 Stations
A Costume Maintenance
area should be adjacent to the Costume Construction Shop. Repairs would occur in this space. A large utility sink, two (2) washers, two
(2) dryers and work table for gluing and ironing. It would be necessary for this space to be well ventilated. Again both incandescent and florescent light
is required.
d. Costume
Shop Storage: S. Forbes will forward the current and projected
number of garments and pieces for the Wells costume collection to HOLT.
i.
Storage needs include – Hat boxes, shoe
boxes and accessories in clear plastic bins.
ii.
Hanging garments on an electric carousel.
iii.
A computer station near the entrance to
track inventory of the Costume Shop.
iv.
Appropriate humidity and temperature control
for the materials being stored.
v.
The Dance and Music Department’s costume
storage needs could also be accommodated in the Costume Shop Storage space.
e. Scene
Shop and Paint Shop
i.
Need to accommodate items that would fit in
the opening of the proscenium.
ii.
Drafting designs courses could be in the
scene shop.
f.
Scenic Design/Lighting Design: This
space could be shared space with Visual Arts.
i.
To accommodate 10 drafting tables.
ii. S.
Forbes commented that a horseshoe shaped arrangement for the stations with a
center work table with a lighting grid above would be desirable
g. Digital
Media Classrom
i.
10 stations
h. Lighting
/ Sound / Electric Shop:
i.
A/V maintenance area is unnecessary if a
there is a central college A/V maintenance shop.
ii. Theatre,
lighting equipment maintenance space will be required.
i.
The Wig, Mask, Make-up Classroom Space:
2 barber chair stations and 10 stations with room for 2 students at each
station.
i.
This space could double as a dressing room
for the “star” of a production.
ii.
This space should include “plenty” of sink
space, mirrored walls at counter level that run around the perimeter of the
room, good ventilation, a dry erase board, multi-media equipment and projection
surface.
j.
The Black Box Theatre:
i.
Dedicated dressing rooms with bathroom.
ii.
Dance could share the Black Box.
k. The
Green Room:
i.
The Green Room would be used by the Black
Box Theatre, Proscenium Theatre and as a conference space for the visual arts
department.
ii.
Comfortable seating as well as a conference
table for 12 or 2 dining room style tables that would seat 6.
iii. A
kitchenette area with filtered water.
l.
Dance Studio:
i.
30’x40’ space. In the ideal scenario there would be two dance studios, one for
ballet and the other for modern dance.
If one studio is provided, careful consideration must be given to the
type of flooring so as to satisfy the requirements of both types of dance,
e.g., a marley type flooring.
m. Office/Meeting
space needs:
i.
Dance Faculty Offices
(1) Dance
faculty office
(2) Dance
Adjunct office

Faculty
(2) Technical
Faculty
(3) Theory
Critic Faculty
(4) Drafting
Design Studio/Office
(5) Costume
Designer
(6) Scenic
Designer
(7)
Lighting Designer
iii. Production
Office that could be used for conference/meeting space with multi-media capabilities.
iv. Production/Marketing
Administrator would need a “front of the house” office, perhaps adjacent to or
part of the Box Office space.
7.
US Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT)
is a good resource for the theatre industry.
