Kim Nolan diary project - English 354 - Mystery Novels

“The Hound of the Baskervilles” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Since I’m not exactly sure what I’m doing, I’ve decided to write about the character Sherlock Holmes. Being that he may be the very first detective created in literature, I find it amazing how many of his characteristics are still found in the descriptions of present day detectives. When I think of the stereotypical private eye, he is the first name that comes to mind.

I have some of my own theories as to why Sherlock Holmes is the way he is. I believe that his meticulous nature adds to his ability to sift through a situation and analyze it from all angles. Sherlock Holmes is a master of being able to look outside the box. His ability to think critically has allowed him to reason out situations that would be difficult for someone who doesn’t see beyond the obvious as Sherlock Holmes does. I tend to believe that Sherlock Holmes likes to take all the information he gathers and mull it over in his own time and place. I think it is important for him to make sure all the pieces to the puzzle fit together before he decides to tell what he knows. I feel because Sherlock Holmes is a man of reputation he is careful not to reveal what he knows until he is positive of its outcome.

I feel there is a sense of arrogance to Sherlock Holmes that I find somewhat compelling. I find myself amazed at how his mind works and anxiously await his next move.
