About JCC

History of Japanese Culture Club

The Japanese Culture Club is dedicated to the appreciation of Japanese and Asian cultures. It reaches out into the community through campus-wide events and shares its knowledge, admiration, and enthusiasm with all it encounters. But this was not an easy task!

Japanese club was founded in 2002 by Kathleen Cornell ‘04, Heather Turner ‘05, Katie Bernstein ‘05 and Heather Mead ‘06. It started as a small club, begun by members of the very first Japanese classes at Wells, but it had the makings of greatness. In a few short years, many changes took place at Wells, and one fateful year, JCC...took off!

In the fall of 2005, Heather Mead and Tina Parente, two staunch leaders with their heads full of Japanese gibberish and dreams, TOOK OVER Japanese Club! With the help (and lusty cheers) of their loyal friends and veteran members, they started using their bizarre lusts for anything Japanese to give them the strength to put the one, the only, JAPANESE CULTURE CLUB into the 21st century!

Mission Statement

Our mission as a club is committed to the education of the student body in regards to the Japanese culture. This dedicated group of individuals is welcoming to all members of the college populace who wish to participate in our goals. We will sponsor enlightening events such as origami and calligraphy workshops, unique cooking sessions, and culturally rich treats like a trip to a traditional Japanese restaurant.

Additionally, we will strive to invite guest speakers and presenters who encourage further enhancement of the idea of the Japanese way of life, if the opportunity arises. Wider participation is a possibility due to the range of material, thus our intellectual pursuit could be broadened to include links with other clubs, such as WISA or POWER to further engage the campus community. To enjoy the extent of our knowledges, we do not allow discrimination in the nature or attitudes of the club, and devote ourselves to the admission of all.

FAQ

What are you guys about? What kinds of things does JCC do?
We are about having fun, and celebrating Japanese Culture specifically (though we find all Asian cultures fascinating). JCC is a good place to meet people with similar interests, just like any other club!

Check out our schedule to see what we're up to! we're going to be doing tons of stuff like doing some Japanese cooking, celebrating Japanese holidays, going to NYC, and just having in general a lot of fun! Keep checking our schedule for changes and updates! And we're always lookin' for new ideas, so let us know if there's something you want JCC to do for YOU!

For more information on what JCC is like, check out this video or this one from the 2005 Club Fair.

Do I need to know Japanese to join JCC?
NO, you do NOT need to know Japanese. While yes, it does seem like most of the members are at least in a Japanese class, knowledge of the language is NOT necessary. All of our club activities are held in English. You may hear some random Japanese being tossed around, but again, that's more appreciation.

Who's in charge around here?
NOT YOU!!! HAHAHAHAH!!! Well let's see, Elizabeth Schechter and David Hicks are the co-chairs... and that's all you need to know for now. Check out the contact page to get in touch with us!

Are there regular meetings? When are they? Where are they?
YES, there are regular meetings, though times and locations may change occassionally. Look out for an email detailing when the first meeting will be. Then we can agree upon a day and time that works well for everyone. Just make sure we have your name on the list serve so we can email you the specifics~!!!

Can I suggest activities for JCC to do?
Sure! Suggest all you want, ideas are welcome! We've already got a lot of things we'll be working on, but if there's something you really want to, or you have and idea of how to make something better, just tell us. We'll keep it in mind! And if you have A LOT of ideas, JUST JOIN THE JCC!!!!

When and where are Anime and DDR nights?
Last semester, Anime nights took place in Cleveland auditorium on Friday nights from 8:00pm until midnight. DDR nights took place in the Sommer Center on Wednesday nights from 9:00pm until people decided to leave. Times and days for this semester will be decided soon.

Do you watch Anime in English or Japanese? Do you use subtitles?
We do watch all the Anime in its original language, Japanese, with English subtitles. It's just better that way. TRUST me. JCC operates under the common belief that dubbing is evil...and don't try to argue with us. Even if you don't understand Japanese, you still get what's going on, and the voice inflection is hysterical.

Can I come to anime nights even if I'm not a member of JCC?
YES!! Anime Nights are open to the entire Wells community. REALLY.

Can I suggest Anime to watch?
While the current semester's schedule may be set, feel free to suggest ideas for next semester or for specials. Please note that we may not show what you want right away, though we promise to keep all your ideas IN MIND. We do appreciate new ideas-- just don't get pissy when we don't SHOW what you want immediately.

How do I submit art for the website?
Anybody can submit whatever art they want for the art page. This includes short stories, fandoms, haiku, drawings, paint images, whatever -- so long as it's original work scanned into the computer and can be sent through email. Send submissions to Elizabeth Schechter, and she will get them up as swiftly as possible.

Please send images as a jpeg (.jpg) and text documents (in English or Japanese) either in the body of the email or as a word document or in rich text format (.doc or .rtf). This is so that I can read/see what you've created ^_^

I want to join! Who do I talk to?
SWEET!! You want to talk to Elizabeth Schechter or David Hicks, at the emails listed here. Or talk to any other JCC member you know, and they'll get you to us.

We aren't drinking sake. We're drunk on life.
