Students read familiar books independently or in pairs while the teacher observes and provides support.

Before - The teacher introduces a new book and completes a picture walk with the students.

 

During - The students read the book as independently as possible.  The teacher observes and assists when appropriate.

 

After - The teacher selects one or two teaching points. Teaches appropriately.

Students engage in a variety of appropriate activities for learning letters, sounds, words and how they work.  Activities could include some of the following:
