Admissions and Financial Aid Committee Meeting

September 7, 2004

12:35 – 1:30

Present: C. Bellomo, P. Greenwood, E. Hall, L. McClusky, L. Miller-Bernal, N. Pellegrino, S. Sloan

As the senior faculty member on the committee, Miller-Bernal called the meeting to order. After a brief discussion, Miller-Bernal agreed to chair the committee for the year and the group will rotate the responsibility of minute taking. McClusky will work with Miller-Bernal to post AFA minutes on aurora.wells.edu.

It was noted that the committee needed one more student representative (a junior) and Pellegrino noted that student elections will take place in three weeks.

Miller-Bernal spoke about the role of AFA and asked the group to consider a direction for the year. The charge of AFA as it should exist in the Faculty Manual is:

The Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid:

(Faculty Manual, Article III. Section 2. The Committees)
The Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid shall consist of three members of the Faculty, one of whom shall be chairperson, the Dean of Students, the Director of Admissions, and the Director of Financial Aid.  Two students shall serve as advisors.

The Committee shall confer with the Administration and Enrollment Management Team on such policy matters as admissions standards, recruitment and retention, and curricular and financial implications of admissions and financial aid.  The Committee shall bring recommendations about requirements for admissions to the Faculty for approval.

This collaboration will focus on making decisions on special cases of admission, coordinating Faculty involvement in the admissions process, and reviewing admissions literature.  The Committee shall also periodically receive reports from the Enrollment Management Team so that it can share this information with the Faculty.

Miller-Bernal requested that Sloan give a presentation to the group about the work of admissions to recruit students. Sloan agreed to prepare a presentation for the next meeting.

The next meeting is scheduled for September 21 at 12:30 in Macmillan 317.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Sloan
