AFA Committee Minutes for March 9, 2007

Present:  S. Gilchrist, L. McClusky, C. Patella, J. Schnurr, C. Speaker, A. Staples,
Guest: N. Karpinksi

1.    Meeting called to order at 8:35 am.

2.    We discussed the Henry Wells Scholarships. Nancy gave a brief history of the program, as well as the current figures. For the class of 2005, 29 students who were given scholarships enrolled at Wells and only 16 of those students graduated; for the class of 2006 43-scholarship students enrolled while only 28 graduated. The current class had 552 nominations, 220 applications and only 58 enrolled. Something is wrong with the current program. We identified 2 main questions:
·    How can the students use their Henry Wells money? All at once, or little at a time? For off-campus study?
·    How can we better integrate these students into life at Wells? One thing that might help is a way for advisors to know which students are Henry Wells scholars!
We need to assess the Henry Wells Scholarship program - maybe changing the criteria and figuring out how to retain these students.

3.    The group was asked to think about what to do with the Henry Wells Scholarships, and will discuss these ideas at our next meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Jaclyn Schnurr
