AFA Committee
Fall 2007 Report delivered December 11, 2007

AFA members include: Anne Lundquist, Cathy Patella, Susan Sloan, Jackie
Schnurr, William Ganis, Elizabeth Maple and myself. Steve Gilchrist has
also been attending our meetings. AFA met seven times this semester.

The Admissions and Financial Aid committee has continued to work on and
discuss issues of attracting and retaining students. AFA (together with
Dean Miller-Bernal) is discussing the need to institutionalize the
concern about gender equity on the Wells campus including such issues as
courses for or about women/equity and monitoring gender ratios in
sections of the community. The committee is also looking into monitoring
and evaluating how Wells portrays itself as a formerly Women’s College
in Admissions literature and on the web.

For the Class of 2011, there were 1148 applications with a 64%
acceptance rate. There are 174 first-year matriculants resulting in a
total Wells enrollment of 546 students. Of the 174 students in the
freshman class, 45 are men (26%) and 126 are women (74%). 22 (16%)
students identified themselves as “students of color” and 5 (3%) are
international students

Respectfully submitted,

Amy Godert
Chair, AFA
