AFA Committee Minutes for September 28, 2005

Present: A. Azevedo, A. Frederick, E. Hall, L. McClusky, L. Miller-Bernal, C. Patella, J. Schnurr, S. Sloan

  1. L. McClusky called the meeting to order at 9:00am. The minutes from 9/21/05 were distributed, amended, and approved.

  1. We discussed the use of last weeks Native American cultural events as a recruitment tool. Although very few prospective Native American students attended, the event had much value in increasing contacts between Wells and the Native community, especially with Frieda Jacques. The best way to recruit Native students is to increase the exposure of the entire Native community (children through adults) to the Wells community. Any event that is able to do that will be a success. However, one suggestion to improve the event for the future was to have one person in charge of organizing the whole event. It was decided that we would recommend that the replacement hire for Dean Morales’ position be given this responsibility. L. McClusky will draft a letter to The President’s Committee on Diversity, which this committee will review next week

  1. E. Hall gave an update on the Off-Campus Study position. The position has already been offered 5 times with no success; Wells has now hired a non-profit search firm from Washington, DC, to help fill the position. Also, Wells has purchased a “microsite” – maintained independently of the Wells website – that will advertise off-campus opportunities.

  1. One problem that Wells has filling positions is the “two-body problem” – finding suitable employment for the partner of an interested job candidate. To help address this problem, Wells has entered into the HERC consortium, made up of institutions such as Syracuse University and local businesses. HERC will maintain a website of current job openings, and will allow for resumes to be posted; all institutions involved understand the difficulty of finding a job in the local area, and this will be taken into consideration.

  1. Current student numbers were noted: 417 “bodies,” and 405 FTEs. L. McClusky will distribute a copy of compiled enrollment statistics next meeting.

  1. C. Patella will report on Financial Aid at the next meeting.

The meeting adjourned at about 9:55 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Jaclyn Schnurr
