March 18, 2004
Present: C.Bellomo, K. Green, T.Lumumba-Kasongo, L.
Miller-Bernal, N. Pelligrino, D. Reis, and S. Sloan
1. Approved the minutes of the
March 11, 2004 meeting.
2. Final tally was completed
for question 20. The committee agreed to
combine intolerance and disrespect as one category. The second largest category was apathy and
there were still a large number of “others” that will be noted as well by the
committee.
3. Members of the committee
provided their responses to question 27of the academic life section. The committee last week decided to re-code
some of the responses since there was a wide range of responses. The top two categories were “they weren’t”
and “substituted another course.” D. Reis will average the other responses and
give the averages to the group at our next meeting.
4. Members of the committee
provided their responses to question 21 of the student life section. A discussion pursued around the choice
“diversity”. L. Miller-Bernal pointed
out that it was not always possible to tell if diversity was meant as too much
or too little in the students’ responses.
We agreed a sentence should be added to our summary of this question
concerning this issue. It was agreed the
“too much” would be added to question 20 and will not be included in question
21. K. Green informed the group that
students’ attitudes concerning diversity is available from the student
committee on diversity who conducted their own survey. D. Reis will average the responses to
question 21 and give the averages to the group at our next meeting.
5. A discussion pursued that
the committee should begin the compilation of data into a final report. Questions about how to proceed were
discussed. C. Bellomo suggested that a binder
of all sections be compiled for others to review if desired and that our
special meeting of the faculty highlight questions that faculty would be
interested in hearing. K. Green
volunteered to provide wine and cheese at the special meeting.
6. It was suggested that we
investigate our ability to hire S. Knowlton to compile the data since she
worked on the project first semester. S.
Sloan and C. Bellomo will investigate this possibility. The complete survey questionnaire is
available on the AFA web page.
