Meeting Minutes

March 4, 2004

12:30 – 1:30 p.m.

Present:  C. Bellomo; K. Edgin; K. Green; L. Miller-Bernal; N. Pelligrino; D. Reis; S. Sloan

The meeting began with approval of the minutes from the February 26th meeting.

Reis passed around a compilation of responses for questions 28, 30, and 33 of the academic life section of the AFA questionnaire.  The group discussed question 28 and made several modifications to the chart.  Reis will provide the group with an updated chart.

The group agreed that for question 30, themes 1 (1-3 times) and 2 (4-6 times) had the highest responses and would be used for the group’s summary.

Members of the group provided their responses to Reis for question 36.  Reis will average the responses and give the averages to the group.  Edgin’s responses will not be used in the average as she didn’t feel she had a strong enough understanding of tenure to fairly rate the responses to the question.  Bellomo requested that a list of the most often seen themes to this question be included with the averages.  These include permanent position, job security, higher pay, and difficulty in firing a person.

The group then created themes for question 27, the last question in the academic life section to be reviewed, including:

  1. Weren’t
  2. Substituted a course
  3. Independent Study
  4. Took a course elsewhere
  5. Rescheduled for another time
  6. Other

The group agreed to return to the student life section next.  They created themes for questions 20 and 21 including:

  1. Intolerance (homophobia, hate speech)
  2. Gossip and rumors
  3. Apathy
  4. Diversity (too much)
  5. Disrespect
  6. Academic Issues
  7. Administration
  8. Mental Health Issues
  9. Other

The group will complete questions 27, 20, and 21 for the next meeting.  The next meeting is scheduled for March 11 at 12:30 p.m. in Macmillan 317.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Sloan
