3.) We then proceeded to return to the discussion of Question 28.
a. Cathy Bellomo stated that the divisional unit would work but do we want to list all classes for each division?
b. Professor Lumumba-Kasongo asked how the suggested classes are going to fit into the already existing majors.
c. Professor Miller-Bernal pointed out that certain classes/themes become evident and should be shown with a chart and possibly a paragraph detailing the chart
d. Professor Reis suggested collecting the highest-ranking division and then provide details in a paragraph.
e. Professor Lumumba-Kasongo suggested that this survey emphasizes what we don’t offer and what we do offer to show depth.
i. Use the classes that we don’t offer to see how much interest there is on campus.
ii. It also offers an opportunity to discuss the purpose of the information and how the information is going to be used.
1. This is especially important when looking at the debate of the future of Wells
f. Professor Reis suggested using his chart as an example and just readjust the chart.
i. Use the example to write the paragraph to say what courses that would exist within pre-existing majors and a paragraph on those that don’t fit into a major.
g. Cathy Bellomo suggested that this portion of the survey could be used to show that students want more variety to pre-existing majors.
i. Highlight the top few classes requested (i.e. American Sign Language)
h. Sciences, Languages, History are very high on the list
i. When classifying classes, Women and Gender Studies should be separated from Queer Studies.
j. A suggestion was to construct a table of divisions with the classes and the numbers
i. The committee already agreed upon the top groups.
ii. Use the idea of a table and paragraph
iii. With a little tweaking the example of Professor Reis’ would be workable
k. Professor Reis asked if there is any information worthy of noting within the paragraph?
i. For example, Students interested in education would benefit from the ability to take an American Sign Language Class.
