Minutes for the Admissions and Financial Aid Committee meeting, February 12,
2004

Present: Cathy Bellomo, Kathleen Edgin, Tukumbi Lumumba-Kasongo, Leslie
Miller-Bernal, Nicole Pellegrino, David Reis (Chair), Susan Sloan

1. The meeting was called to order by Chair Reis at about 12:40 pm.

2. The revised minutes of the meeting of 2/5/04 were approved unanimously.

3. We examined committee members' codings for questionnaire item 8, adding a
few people's codings that had not previously been entered. We discussed the
diversity of views about the honor code, noting that a large number of
students believe it is important, even if flawed. Committee members' codings
differed quite a bit, but David will be averaging our "answers" and recording
the top 3 responses' averages. When we report the findings, we will note the
diversity of students' responses and the consequent difficulties of
categorizing them.

4. After much discussion of coding Question 11 responses, we decided it was
not possible to reduce the number of responses that fell into the "other"
category. For this item, we will report on only the top two responses (since
saying how many responses feel into "other" does not add to understanding
students' views of how to change the honor code).

5. We had an easier discussion of lunch arrangements. Rather than the Dean's
office always paying for pizza, we decided we would rotate the office or
academic department that will pay since the amount is only about $14. We are
going in reverse aplphabetical order, David wanted the minutes to record (!),

beginning therefore with Susan Sloan in admissions.

6. We discussed coding question 28 and decided first just to list all the
academic areas students would like to see at Wells. After we have such lists,
we will discuss ways of grouping them.

7. To code question 30 on times per semester a student says she meets with her
advisor, we decided on the following groups or codes:

0= None, 1=1 to 3 times, 2=4 to 6 times, 3=7 and more times, 4=other. If a
student gave a range, we will take the average and then assign the appropriate
code.

8. We adjourned at about 1:35.

Respectfully submitted,

Leslie Miller-Bernal
