Advisory Committee Report to the Faculty

May 9, 2000

The Advisory Committee consisting of Professors Chris Bailey, Leslie Miller-Bernal, Crawford Thoburn, and Arnold Shilepsky (Chair) met one to three times a week throughout the semester.

We held the required open meeting early in the semester to discuss the concerns of the faculty. The three major issues raised were faculty salaries and benefits, academic development and consultants, and the faculty search process. A summary of this meeting was emailed to the faculty.

Individual members of the committee participated in the President's ad hoc Committee on Faculty Salaries, attended meetings of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board, attended meetings of the Bridge Committee and distributed faculty travel funds. An Advisory Committee web page was created to make important documents and information available to the faculty and to facilitate the work of the committee.

The Committee participated in the evaluation of two colleagues for promotion to Full Professor and conducted two seven year reviews. The Committee approved three special leave of absence requests from faculty members. The committee dealt with other personnel related questions and met with the President and Dean several times.

The Committee has, to date, approved and disbursed $8,408.52 to twenty-six members of the faculty for travel to professional meetings. The remainder of the $15,000 allocated funds will be distributed to faculty for summer research and for some of the expenses that were not reimbursed earlier.

The Committee participated extensively with the faculty members on the Bridge Committee (Professors Groth, Thoburn and A. Shilepsky) in the Faculty Manual revision process. A Faculty Manual approval process was passed by the Faculty and Article I Sections 1-3 received provisional approval at a special meeting of the faculty.

Respectfully Submitted,

Arnold Shilepsky, Chair

Advisory Committee on Faculty Personnel
