Advisory Committee Report to the Faculty
May 8, 2001
The Advisory Committee consisting of Professors Waltraut Deinert, Beatrice Farnsworth, Kent Klitgaard, and Arnold Shilepsky (Chair) met one or more times a week throughout the semester.
We held the required open meeting early in the semester to discuss the concerns of the faculty. Topics discussed included the status of the early retirement proposal, hiring and evaluating visiting professors, timing of decisions on salary and teaching positions, and the current role of Division Chairs. A summary of this meeting was emailed to the Faculty.
Individual members of the committee participated in the President’s ad hoc Committee on Faculty Salaries, represented the Committee on the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees, participated on the Bridge Committee and on the Retirement Subcommittee, and distributed faculty travel funds. The Advisory Committee's web page was maintained to make important documents and information available to the faculty and to facilitate the work of the committee.
The Committee dealt with the issues related to early retirement, hiring, and the evaluation process. We appealed a recommendation of the President that reversed the recommendations of an Evaluation Subcommittee and the Advisory Committee to the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees. The appeal was denied.
The committee has allocated over eleven thousand dollars in travel and research funds to approximately 35 faculty members. About five thousand dollars remains to be distributed to people whose travel to meetings funds fell short of their actual expenses.
The Subcommittee on Retirement surveyed the Faculty and reported the results at a Faculty meeting. They continued to meet with the administration to develop a retirement plan. Last week the Board of Trustee's approved that Vice President and Treasurer Hutchinson and Vice President for Academic Affairs Hall move forward with the development of a retirement plan for tenured faculty.
Respectfully Submitted,
Arnold Shilepsky, Chair
Advisory Committee on Faculty Personnel
