Teaching, for me, is a
craft that I am constantly striving to retool and learn more about. Teaching,
like learning, is a life-long process of inquiry, not an end result. Teaching
has many methods and rationales but, for me, teaching is mostly an art.
The most important aspect of teaching is the process of questioning what
is already assumed to be known and "normal". For that, one first has to
be well grounded in what has already been studied and how this was studied.
In psychology, that traditional training is just as important to then move
forward in new ways and not repeat the errors of the past, such as, scientific
racism, deficiency theories, and misguided intelligence testing. Teaching
is a challenge for me to learn
with students. As we learn and explore
together, we form a community of learners who inquire, argue, listen thoughtfully,
and are willing to risk being spontaneous and thinking creatively about
human behavior. That's my ideal classroom and I love creating that with
students. Things don't always turn out as planned but that is part of the
learning.
