JULIANA JAMES NATIVE AMERICAN VISITING SCHOLAR

We are instructed to carry love for one another,
And to show great respect for all beings of the earth.
We must stand together, the four sacred colors of man,
as the one family that we are,
in the interest of peace....
Our energy is the combined will of all the people
With the spirit of the natural world,
To be of one body, one heart, and one mind.

Chief Leon Shenandoah (Onondaga)

The Juliana James Native American Visiting Scholar fund will be used to support a residency of a Native American scholar on the Wells College campus. The term, "Visiting Scholar" is understood broadly and includes, but is not limited to, Artists, Musicians, Academics, Faith Keepers, Clan Mothers, Storytellers, Teachers, and Chiefs of the Six Nations of the Haudenosuanee (Iroquois Confederacy). The Juliana James Native American Visiting Scholar would offer workshops, lectures, art exhibits, performances, or courses for a semester or a shorter period of time whichever would be of greatest mutual benefit.

Since Wells is located within the Cayuga Nation territory, one of the six nations of the Haudenosaunee, it is right to develop and sustain mutual respect, understanding, and knowledge between the college and the Haudenosaunee. This would be what Juliana would do.

Each academic year, in consultation with the Dean of the College, Wells College faculty, staff, and students who identify as Native American will collaboratively decide whom to invite to be the Juliana James Native American Visiting Scholar. The Dean of the College will convene the group to choose the Visiting Scholar each year and work collaboratively to invite and assist in planning and organizing the visit. It is hoped that Family and Friends of Juliana James will contribute to this fund on an annual basis and that Wells College will match the amount every year thus maintaining this fund as a viable resource for building bridges and supporting Native American Studies at the College.
