MATH 251, Probability and Statistics I, Fall 2001, Day 5
Late addition: SPSS is on the computers
in Mac 101, also on the 3 Dell computers in the Soc. Sci. lab, Mac
304.
Last HW. Keep it if you had trouble. We'll discuss it next
time.
-- 1.113 sometimes stumps people. Here's a hint--you have xbar
and s before, and xbar* and s*
(after transforming). You have two equations relating them: xbar*
= a + bxbar, s*= bs. Substitute and solve for a and b.
Try to do it by yourself, before looking at--> .
HANDOUT: Solutions to Day
4, A and 1.113
SPSS Introduction HANDOUT. Work through as much as you can in
class.
Homework is on the back of the handout. You'll probably
need to go through, or at least read, the rest of the handout sheets and
the parts of the manual (including the "optionals") that we don't finish
in class, to find the analyses you need.
For next time: We'll continue, do the Normal distribution.
Homework (all in SPSS) repeated here: Math 251 Homework Day 5 (Monday,
Sep.10).
1. Transforming variables: Recoding. Start with example 1.1,
voting. (Use spssmanex1_1.sav) Save it as Sally HW5_1.sav (use your name,
not mine) Go through. sec, 0.9, p. 15-16. Print out your data set
. (You don't get any choices here. You can Print Preview from the File
menu. It will look like the screen. You can change that with
View>Fonts,&Gridlines, but that's about it.)
Text pp. 98-99, 1.121 and 122, using SPSS. (The Salaries (no names)
are in the Ta01_010.dat file, in one column. The Excel file
is a mess for our purpose--3 columns of data, still no names)
Transforming using a formula: read p.52-53 and do it. Print out your
data set, and the items asked for (you'll get other junk too. Circle
the requested numbers.) (Printing, p. 17-18)
.
Text, 1.110 a,b,d. These are actually Prof. Moore's drivetimes.The
drivetimes are in the Ex01_109.dat file (misnumbered) in a single column,
and in Ex1_110.xls, single column with a variable label. Import either.
Save both your original file and the one without outliers. (We will come
back to part c.)
On your output write the values you removed for part b.
