Math 151 , Fall 2001, Wednesday, Sept. 12, Day 6

Homework, Day 6 (Friday, Feb. 9)  Do all with SPSS except as noted.
1. Finish working through the handout. Hand in the boxplot printout from part A [in handout]

2.  Use the file for table 1-6 you made in part B, or Table1_6f.sav.

• Do 1.24, p. 27 in your textbook.  Make a histogram and a stemplot.
• Find the 5-number summary, the mean, and the IQR for Teacher's pay. (the numbers you need will be scattered and buried in several tables.  Print the tables, circle the numbers you need.)
• Make side-by side boxplots for Teacher's pay for the 9 different regions.  Do you see any difference in pay across regions? [Hint: Use GRAPHS to get a "simple" boxplot with "groups of cases", regions as the Category axis.]

3.  Do 1.75a,b,c, p. 70 :

First import the data. (It is one long column in Ex01_75.xls or .txt) Now save your file.
 Do a, (by hand or with SPSS).  Do b.
 For  part c, find the mean, median,  and standard deviation of the whole set, then delete the 3 outliers * and find the mean, median,  and standard deviation without them.  How have they changed?

*Removing cases, Sec. 0.10, pp. 17-18.  If you delete the last one first, the numbers of the earlier ones won't change.
