Math 151 , Fall 2004, Wednesday, Sept. 8,  Day 6

In Mac 101 Lab with SPSS. 
Correct HW output  will be posted in 101 (not all written answers are there)
Handout: 6 sides with HW on the 6th.  Extras will be in the white folder outside my door.

Read p. 1, Work through page 2, at least thru Changing properties ,
Page 3:  Start by putting pulse only into Dependent list: OK.  Examine output. 
  Then add height to Dependent list.  Open the Statistics button, Check Percentiles.  Examine output.
  Open Options button.  Explore the difference between listwise and pairwise exclusion (there are 25 pulses & 26 heights).
  Move hair (coded) to Factor list, examine output.
Start to print (p.1), using print preview.  Be sure to select output.
Import a file (p. 5):
Page 4: Interactive graphs.  Do histogram, dotplot shown.

Printing,  alternatives to printing direct from SPSS:
--You can Copy a graph or table and Paste it into a Word document, save and print that.
(Highlight the desired objects in the outline panel to the left, Edit>Copy)
Help can give more printing tricks.

Homework, Day 6:  Hand in each problem as you finish it.  (You can drop them in the Math 151 box outside Mac 101, Sievers office) You don't have to do them in order.  Try to get at least 1 in by Friday.
All due on or before Wednesday, Day 9 (Sept.15)

 Use SPSS unless otherwise instructed.
Print all graphs; copy down numbers onto the paper instead of printing those big tables.

A. Investigate the issue with data wrongly labeled Nominal or Ordinal. Use the file
Studat for SPSS (Which you changed and saved after working p. 2)
(Studat complete is what you should have gotten; use that one if you don't have yours.)
Make a dot plot and a histogram of Pulse. Now change the Measure for Pulse to Ordinal.
Try making a dot plot and a histogram of Pulse again (The icon for Pulse should not be a ruler any more. If it is, hit Reset, so the icon becomes the 3 towers. Then proceed.)Print the graphs and write on your paper what has happened, and what is wrong with the Ordinal graph(s).

Moore p. 44, 1.42. (Done last time. Repeat, this way.) Import that data set. Check Measure type: Nominal and Scale are right. Name the first column "Group," the second "Data". (The Group A cases are row "Data A" in the book; Group B cases ="Data B." Check it out.)
Get the mean and s.d. for groups A and B (the Group column is your "Factor").
Get "side by side" dotplots by putting the Data on the horizontal axis and the Group variable on the vertical axis. Print the dotplots, copy off the means and s.d.'s.
SPSS won't do back to back stemplots. Which do you prefer for comparing--Dot or Stemplot?

Moore p. 27, 1.26. (Teacher's pay) Import the data (It's Table 1-6, TA01-06). (If that doesn't work, use Table1_6f.sav in SPSS for class folder.) Name the columns for Region and TeachersPay at least. (I added a Label, "Teacher's Pay ($1000))
  Make a histogram and a stemplot in SPSS. Answer the text's questions.
  Find the 5-number summary, the mean, and the IQR for Teacher's pay.
  Make side-by side boxplots for Teacher's pay for the 9 different regions. Do you see any difference in pay across regions?

Moore p. 69 1.75a,b,c,+ (Drive times)
  First import the data. (It is one long column in Ex01-75) Check Measure! Now save your file.
  Do a, (by hand or with SPSS). Do b.
  For part c, find the mean, median, and standard deviation of the whole set, then delete the 3 outliers (click on the gray case number to select the row, hit delete key), find the mean, median, and standard deviation without them. How have they changed?
  ALSO make a histogram with a normal curve on it (data without outliers)
(Don't save the data file again or you'll lose those 3 outliers forever.)
(Alternative to deleting: Select the subset you want, using something like 7 <drivtim & drivtim < 9.5)
