Academic Program and Policy Committee, Meeting Minutes

Minutes of 11/29/04 APPC meeting

Present: Staples (Chair), Bennett, Denard, Dean Hall, Leybold-Taylor, Penniman, Sievers, Talbot, Vargo; student members: Jaber, Jordan, Pellegrino, Smith

The meeting was called to order at 12:40.

The minutes for 11/22/04 were tabled.

Chair Staples announced that the Committee should make a recommendation about the position requests as presented last week by Dean Hall. There was discussion about whether to prioritize the positions in our recommendation. The Dean explained the difference between tenure-track positions and visiting positions and what these different positions mean to the institution.

The proposed position in Business and Management was discussed, as was the Religion and Philosophy position. The problem of one-person Majors was also brought up. There were statements made in favor of other individual positions in the Dean's proposal, including the Women's Studies position.

The Committee voted unanimously to recommend the positions as presented by the Dean, including the academic support positions, without prioritizing them.

Next, Dean Denard reintroduced her Draft of the new Wells 101 proposal, explaining how her proposal differs from the APPC Subcommittee's recommendations in its report last year. She acknowledged that a central issue is how important the writing component of the new course would be.

Nicole Pellegrino responded by providing a perspective on the Subcommittee's reasoning in its proposal last year.

Further discussion ensued about freshman writing and the role it plays for incoming students. The Committee agreed to continue this discussion next week as well as in future meetings, if necessary.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:40.

Respectfully submitted,

Bruce Bennett
