Present: Professors Staples (chair), Bennett, Penniman, Sievers, Talbot and Uddin; Registrar Leybold-Taylor; Head Librarian Vargo; Dean Hall; Associate Dean Denard; ICS Director Karpinski; Student members Jaber, Jordan and Pellegrino.

Chair Staples called the meeting to order at 12:36 p.m.

Proceedings:

The minutes for 10/25/04 and 11/1/04 meetings were unanimously approved.

Dean Denard, with assistance of Director Karpinski, presented a “Revised Proposal for Experiential Learning” that takes into consideration the discussions at the previous two APPC meetings. In this presentation, particular attention was drawn to the Experiential Learning Options and the New Summary of Requirements components of this document.

Discussion on this revised proposal was opened. Questions, concerns and issues touched upon in the discussion follow.

The definition of experiential learning and that of experiential learning seminar.

Henry Wells Scholarships: Could these be used for experiential learning seminars and for study abroad programs? Discussion on this question was tabled.

Transfer students and experiential learning requirements: The requirements will depend upon how a student transfers in, i.e., as a freshman, sophomore or junior.

Study abroad experiences and experiential learning requirements.

Military experience, and whether it can be used as an experiential learning. Dean Denard contends that it should count as "prior-experience" internship towards the college-wide experiential learning requirements.

Off-Campus Study in the U.S. (i.e., domestic OCS) and experiential learning requirements.

The issue of faculty workload in light of the proposed experiential learning requirement was raised, but not quite discussed.

Dean Denard will circulate within APPC a modified version of the proposed revised document by Friday, November 12.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:37 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Muin Uddin, Secretary pro tem.
