Approval of the 3/17 minutes was tabled until our next meeting.
New Business: Curriculum for Fall 2005
1. Arts
The following proposals were approved:
ART 105: Drawing from Nature—a new course. This replaces ART
122: Figure Drawing which will be re-introduced as a special topics course
at some point.
ART 241: title changed from Beginning Pottery I to Introduction to
Oxidation Fired Pottery and new description added.
ART 242: title changed from Beginning Pottery II to Introduction to
Reduction Fired Pottery and new description added.
ART 345: title changed from Special Topics in Ceramics to Special Topics
in Ceramics and Sculpture, new description added and change in prerequisite
to read “at least one of the following—ART 118, ART 241, ART 242 or portfolio
of previous work in a 3-D area”.
ARTH 385: Impressionism and Post-Impressionism—special topics course.
PART 385: Introduction to Lighting Design—special topics course.
PE 111: Beginning Springboard Diving—deleted.
2. Humanities
The following proposals were approved:
AMST 110: Banned Books: A Cultural History.—a new course. English
240 will be postponed as a result. In response to the question of
why this course was not being offered as a special topics course, Leybold-Taylor
clarified that it was a result of the need for lower level courses for
next year. It was also noted that this course could be reconfigured
as a WELLS 101 course.
AMST 290/390: Internships in AMST. These had not previously been
noted in the catalog.
BKRT 115: Handbinding I. Current course content was modified and
course description changed. Although noted as a half-semester course
this is a full semester.
BKRT 120: Letterpress: Intro to Typography—new title and “Materials
fee: $30” will be changed to “Labfee: $75”.
BKRT 220: Typography 2: Digital Design—new title and “Materials fee:
$30” will be changed to “Labfee: $75”.
BKRT 385: The Printed Edition—special topics course. Although
noted as a half-semester course this is a full semester.
ENGL 202: Studies in Literature and Film—new title and new description.
ENGL 212: Portrayal of Gender in Fiction—new title and new description.
ENGL 250: British Literature 1800 to the Present—new course

FLLC curricular proposals were approved as outlined in Dean Koester’s memo.
Student Jordan asked for clarification on Wells’ process for assigning incoming students to foreign language courses. Prof. Staples clarified that students were no longer tested but were assigned based on level of prior courses taken. Jordan expressed concern that this will make it difficult for WILL students who may have taken courses many years before entering Wells.
RELG 105: Religious Traditions of the West—new course.
RELG 106: Religious Traditions of the East—new course. RELG 105
and 106 combined replace RELG 101
RELG 263: The Hebrew Bible and Jewish Tradition—new title and new level.
This replaces RELG 163—Old Testament and Hebrew Beginnings.
RELG 264: New Testament and Early Christianity—new level, was RELG

RELG 275: The Religions of China and India—new title and new description.
RELG 321: Faith, Culture, and Modernity—new title
RELG 335: Religion in Antiquity—new course. RELG 265 is
being deleted.
RELG 375: Body and Soul: From Antiquity to Post-Modernity—current course
is modified—new title, description, and prerequisites.
Religion Major modifications were approved as noted in memo from Joe Hoffman.
Members were reminded that the next APPC meeting will be held on Wed. April 6th at 8:30. APPC will also meet on Thursday April 7th at 12:30.
