Academic Program and Policy Committee, Meeting Minutes

MINUTES of APPC Meeting, March 3rd, 2005  [Approved March 10, 05]

Present: (Committee members) Bennett, Denard, Jordan, Leybold-Taylor, Hall, Pellegrino, Penniman, Staples, Sievers, Talbot, Uddin, Vargo (Visitors) Garrett, Groth

The meeting began at 12:40.

Student representative Pellegrino announced that as of now, no new student representatives have been found to serve on the committee.

Chair Staples reported on the meetings with faculty on Monday about the Experiential Learning proposal. Nine faculty members (apart from members of the committee) came to the meeting at 12:30, and none came at 4:30.
Many continued to express opposition to the Experiential Learning proposal as it currently stands.

Chair Staples introduced the motion to withdraw the proposal from consideration at the March 8th faculty meeting. Brief discussion followed about the proposal and the faculty's response to it. The committee expressed thanks once more to Dean Denard and Nancy Karpinski for their work on the proposal. The committee then voted unanimously to withdraw the proposal from consideration.

Dean Denard introduced the two proposals relating to next year's Wells 101, her own "Introduction to College" course and last year's APPC Subcommittee proposal.

Professor Garrett spoke of the need for a Coordinator for Wells 101 if it takes the form of the one-semester writing seminar proposed by the subcommittee last year.

Wide-ranging discussion followed about various aspects of the 101 proposals, including such matters as the "skills" component, where Writing Intensive electives may fit in, problems of staffing, possible solutions to the need to have some sort of orientation proseminar.

Further discussion of all these matters and issues will be continued next week.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:35.

Respectfully submitted,
Bruce Bennett
