END OF SEMESTER REPORT TO THE FACULTY
THE COMMITTEE ON ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID
DECEMBER 10, 2002

The Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid met nine times and held one open meeting this semester.

In the open meeting AFA presented a series of brief reports which addressed questions posed by faculty related to the awarding of financial aid, merit scholarships in general and the Henry Wells Scholarship program specifically, internships, retention, student life, and criteria for admissions. At the open meeting, it was requested that these reports be given in even briefer versions to the whole faculty. Susan Sloan and Meghan McCune presented to the faculty on November 12th and Cathy Bellomo, Karen Green, and Terry Martinez presented today.

AFA began to develop a survey that will seek out student perceptions of curriculum, financial aid, campus life, and admissions because we believe that gathering information from students through the student(s) member(s) of AFA will most likely provide views we have not been privy to before. This survey will be carried out during spring term and the results presented to the faculty when completed.

AFA met with the Enrollment Management Team once this semester to discuss the history and development of EMT, to avoid overlap when possible, and support each other's work.

AFA began an ongoing discussion of its charge as stated in the faculty manual. We are discussing the current charge as well as the revised charge that was approved by straw vote only. This ongoing discussion is geared toward two goals: first, clarifying the role of AFA vis a vis EMT which carries out similar work to that done by AFA but is a policy making group and, second, to revise the charge in light of changes to the Henry Wells Scholarship program.

Dean Carolyn Morales was invited to and did attend one meeting to discuss issues of diversity, admissions, and financial aid.
