Present: C. Bellomo; K. Green; E. Hall; T. Lumumba-Kasongo; V Muñoz;
D.
Reis; S. Sloan
The meeting began with nominations and an election of a committee chair.
Lumumba-Kasongo nominated Muñoz as chair which the committee
unanimously
supported in their subsequent election.
Muñoz noted that a student representative should join the committee
by
election from the student body. Hall stated that Meghan McCune had
been
elected to the committee at Collegiate's recent elections, but that
McCune was also running for a student slot on APPC.
Muñoz presented the broad objectives of AFA as they appear in
the
faculty manual and then requested that committee members put forth
agenda items they would like discussed during the year. Lumumba-Kasongo
requested a discussion and presentation around student diversity as
it
relates to recruitment and asked that Carolyn Morales join the committee
at an upcoming meeting. The committee also discussed faculty desire
for
information around recruitment and retention. Muñoz suggested
an open
meeting. Sloan requested that faculty gather questions from faculty
prior to an open meeting so that AFA members could be prepared to
respond to specific questions that require data analysis. Reis
volunteered to contact faculty via email to solicit questions. Initial
questions presented by Muñoz and Lumumba-Kasongo included the
Henry
Wells Scholars program and identifying dominant and secondary factors
influencing retention. The group also discussed the need to connect
the
Enrollment Management Team and AFA in meaningful ways.
The committee will meet again on September 19 at 12:30 p.m. in Macmillan
317. Muñoz will invite Carolyn Morales to join the group for
a
conversation about diversity and recruitment. Agenda items include:
Diversity and recruitment, and faculty requests for information and
the
open meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Sloan
