Discussion of the Faculty Meeting of Tuesday, November 12, 2002
Susan Sloan presented information on entering freshmen classes and the Henry Wells Scholars program and Meghan McCune shared comments from students that she interviewed about internship programs and the Henry Wells Scholarship program.

Meghan will be devising a survey that will be given to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  Members of the committee who attended the faculty meeting felt that overall the faculty were appreciative of the information.  Meghan had some concern regarding the negative comments she has heard concerning the bias of the survey since students already know the survey is forthcoming.  Meghan stated the survey is not completed and she will share the survey with the Admissions and Financial Aid Committee before it is released.  There was an agreement among the members that we did not want to see a discussion concerning the validation of the survey.  It is a survey that is asking students of their perceptions and is a means to share information among the Wells College community.

Action:  Prof. Reiss will be sending an e-mail to faculty asking them what they want to learn from students regarding admissions & financial aid issues i.e. academic criteria for admissions, internships, and admissions standards.

There was a discussion regarding the "charge" of the Admissions and Financial Aid Faculty Committee in the present faculty manual.  It appears that the current manual available to faculty is not the "charge" that was rewritten by the Committee in the past.  The revised mission statement was approved by the faculty in a straw vote but has not been placed in the manual.  Since the Board of Trustees will not vote on this part of the manual, the Committee can ask the faculty to ratify a revised "charge" statement from AFA.  Discussion concerned the wording of a mission statement that is theory base and one that is tasked oriented.   There was a concern to not have a mission statement that is so task oriented that the committee could not deal with important issues on campus as they arise over the years i.e. The Learning Center and the Henry Wells Scholars Program.  On the other hand, should the mission statement note that annual reports from admissions, financial aid, and retention should be given every year.

Action:  It was agreed to table this discussion until next week.  Everyone should review the current statement, revised statement, and formulate what they would like the "charge" to be that would best serve the Wells College Community.

The meeting ended with a discussion of what information Cathy Bellomo should present at the Faculty meeting in December.  It was agreed that she cover:  Financial Aid Packaging Goals, Current Packaging Policies, Stats on our current % on Aid/Full Pay student population, and the current 2002-2003 tuition revenue data.

Next Meeting:  Thursday, November 21, 2002 12:30pm
