Minutes of the Admissions and Financial Aid (AFA) Committee Meeting
October 3, 2002

Present:  C. Bellomo; K. Green; E. Hall; T. Martinez; M. McCune; V. Muñoz (chair); D. Reis; S. Sloan; Absent:  Prof. T. Lumumba-Kasongo

Meeting was called to order at 12:40.

The group gave great consideration to how AFA can most effectively work with the EMT without duplication of work or efforts.  EMT can provide information to the AFA regarding enrollment, retention, and academic quality for distribution to faculty.  Additionally, faculty can use information collected about student departure to inform dialogues about program.

C. Bellomo discussed financial aid packaging policies and how decisions impact various populations (foreign students, WILL, etc.)   V. Muñoz inquired about how faculty might be involved in the packaging policies with regard to how those policies impact on diversity and quality.  S. Sloan explained how the budget determines how much money can be dispensed and how she and C. Bellomo are responsible for allocating those funds to shape a class.

It was decided that the AFA committee will hold an open meeting on Monday, October 21st at 4:45 in the AER.  The format will cover three areas:

What is the campus like  today?
S. Sloan demographics and cohort retention information
M. McCune - What it is like to be a student on campus today

How financial aid packaging policies effect enrollment
C. Bellomo

Next steps for EMT
 K. Green building support in student life
 T. Martinez building systems to analyze student persistence or departure

All will check their regarding the proposed date and inform chair if there are any problems.

Meeting adjourned at 1:40
